Sputnik The Cold War was not a full out war, but only a fierce competition for military leadership it was more political than anything else. It developed after WWII between groups of Communist nations and non-Communist nations. During the Cold War, distrust, suspicion and misunderstanding reigned between the two groups. The United States thought the Soviet Union was trying to expand Communism throughout the world, and the Soviet Union thought the United States was practicing imperialism and attempting to stop revolutions in other countries. The United States wanted all nations to be independent and democratic, while the Soviet Union, in communist fashion, attempted to tightly control areas it thought were important. The United States and Soviet Union disagreed on many things, and soon they were accusing each other of wanting to rule the world. Each believed themselves to be right, and so strengthened their own weapons. Both sides built and hoarded powerful but unnecessary weapons such as nuclear bombs. Each nation was in a rush to outdo the other, but at the same time they both were struggling to prepare for the attack that seemed so inevitable. Like the arms race there was another race born out of the tensions (also the soviets launch of sputnik) between the Soviet Union and the United States it was the space race The "Space Race" was a race between the two sides for domination of space. Both sides wanted to have superior space exploration technology for many purposes, mostly related to war or politics at the time. So, they engaged in a tense competition for superiority in space technology called the Space Race. Hence the Apollo space program was born to compete with the soviets against there space program. Out of all the Apollo program Apollo 11 just happened to be the first one to actually land on the moon.
The Space Race was an intense competition between the United States and the soviet Union to develop the first real-world exploration of outer space. It involved pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites, send man into space, and land man on the Moon. The Space Race occurred during the Cold Ear between 1957 and 1975, with its origins in the arms race between the two nations. It effectively began with the Soviet launch of Sputnik on October 4th 1957. with the Soviet Union now ahead of the United States, they responded by putting there own space program into action which was called the Apollo program. Though the Soviets started the space race with the launching of Apollo 11 the United States successfully landed the first humans on Earth's Moon on July 2oth, 1969 basically bringing the space race to a end. The spark of the space race was actually one of the most important aspects of the race itself, through the soviets success of Sputnik America was affected in a big way. Sputnik's success sent American culture into a fit Americas were already fearful enough of the strength and spread of communism but the success of this project made Americans even more fearful, also Sputnik pushed the United States to large technological advancements that probably wouldn't have been put into action as quick if it wasn't for Sputnik. Sputnik also symbolized the turning point in the cold war. In all the advancements of the soviet unions Sputnik effected and greatly impacted America in many was and was a very good representation of that time period.
